Enrollment at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is at its lowest in over 50 years, primarily due to young Black men feeling disconnected, misunderstood, and unsupported in these spaces. Many don’t see themselves represented and feel the institutions fall short of their promises. Dr. Charles Cole reflects on the deeper systemic problems, including poor early education, lack of genuine support, and strained family dynamics. To fix this, we need to improve education, address mental health, foster genuine inclusion, and empower young Black men to seek mentorship and create their own paths to success.

Ernest Crim III, an anti-racist educator, author, and social media influencer helps break down the significance of Black history in combating racism and empowering youth. Ernest shares his personal journey and how being the victim of a hate crime lead to him becoming an educator. The discussion emphasizes the importance of mentorship and active engagement in children's lives to foster resilience and pride in their heritage. Chris, Sharif, and Ish ask Mr. Crim about intentional environments for youth development, the impact of teacher expectations on Black students, and the challenges faced by Black parents in navigating the education system. They emphasize the significance of critical consciousness and the relevance of Black history in today's society, while also addressing the myth that educators' lives are free from challenges.

Shayna Terrell and Dr. Greg Carr discuss the significance of Black History Month, the importance of celebrating Black identity, and the historical context of Black narratives. From the legacy of Harriet Tubman beyond her role in freeing slaves, to the ongoing debate about the relevance of Black History Month, Dr. Carr takes us to class. Shayna and Dr. Carr discuss the implications of recent executive orders on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, particularly in the context of Black History Month. They also explore how these orders affect celebrations of Black culture and the broader implications for education and social justice.
